Guides - z32 - How Boost Leak Testers work

Boost Leak Testers are used to pressurize your intake piping and manifold to reveal all loose hoses, leaky hoses, and leaky gaskets. Why is this important? Well it's quite simple. When your car is being forced pressure all of that pressure produced by Turbo(s) is induced into the intake manifold. If your leaking pressure your loosing power. The Boost Leak Tester is used to pressurize your intake via air supply. Allowing you to hear the hissing of any leak and whether your system is able to hold the pressure. Some key things to remember are.

-If you pressurize your intake system and the gauge doesn't rise within 5 seconds to at least 1 psi then there is a leak present. Listen very carefully as leaks are very easy to hear. They can be somewhat difficult to locate but you will definitely hear the leak. This is why having a gauge mounted on the tester is important. It allows you to see if your intake system is building pressure or not.

-Once pressure is held at 7psi it will eventually start to drop... this is normal seeing that some of the pressure exits out the exhaust. If you'd really like to test your system you can tape your exhaust pipes closed to hold the pressure.

-A very common leak point and way to release pressure is the oil dipstick. If your dipstick keeps popping out when you pressurize the system make sure that it seats tightly and replace it if it doesn't.
